Good Morning Joyful Readers!

How on earth is September almost here?! I can hardly believe August is almost over and that Halloween is only (frantically checks calendar) 9 weeks away. On the topic of Halloween, our kiddo’s current costume request is Ghost Spider. We’ll wait to see where we’re at in a few weeks before buying it but I have a feeling it won’t change!

Bookish Notes

This past week brought TONS of book mail my way. Some amazing publisher book mail and a few preorders and purchases as well. Needless to say my TBR shelves are overflowing with great options to choose from.

My most anticipated book that arrived last week was a special edition of Soul of Shadow by Emma Noyes from the YA Once Upon a Book Club Box subscription of and I must confess that it’s even more gorgeous than I imagined it would be. I coincidentally also snagged a pretty copy for $1 (plus shipping) from Allstora from signing up for a trial Romantasy membership (and yessss if you didn’t know Emma Noyes has a book club!) so I now own two beautiful copies.

Good Morning Joyful Readers!

Creating a habit takes time and dedication. And I’ll be honest, I forgot what day of the week it was — hence the delayed posting time today. I write notes throughout the week but Tuesday evening is when I’ve been making the final touches and scheduling my post. What was I doing last night instead of writing? Mushing up the 11 super ripe bananas in our kitchen to make tons of banana muffins because baked goods are best when shared, right?

Bookish Notes

It’s Summer and it’s Augtober too; part of me longs for summer beach reads while another part of me is screaming for Fall and all the witchy reads. And because I’m a self-proclaimed mood reader, I’m 100% here for all of it. I honestly don’t understand how someone could be anything other than a mood-reader but maybe that’s just a bookstagram term and all the non-bookstagram people are living their lives reading whatever they feel like at any given moment —that’s how I picture it anyway.

This past week brought TONS of book mail my way. Needless to say my TBR shelves are overflowing with great options to choose from. One of my new favorites is Where to Go When with Kids from LonelyPlanet. They make the best travel books and I’m so incredibly lucky to received them for free from the publisher!

I must confess that I started using Goodreads again to track my books and it’s made a huge difference in the way I stay organized. I know Goodreads is owned by Amazon but there’s a few features that just don’t compare for me in alternatives like StoryGraph. And while I want to support BIPOC women-owned businesses (I was a premium StoryGraph member last year), I need something that’s quick and easy. I still hold out hope that the user experience will improve and that I can one day make the full transition to SG but for now, Goodreads it is.

What’s bringing me joy:

• Continuing to take our kiddo to swim school. She’s having so much fun and this past weekend we stopped in at a fun cafe for coffee and breakfast afterwards.

• We went to the children’s science museum again and our kiddo had so much fun. It’s so cool getting to watch her learn and grow.

• The rainbow of bookish candles from Novelly Yours. They all smell good and they brighten up my day every time I see them on my bookshelf. P.S. I’m currently a rep for her shop — use code JOYFULBLOGGER to save at checkout!

• We bought new sets of bath towels - we’ve always had white towels but decided to change it up and got some gorgeous navy ones.

• In an attempt to waste less food, I got a weekly meal planner notepad. It’s only been a few days but I have a feeling it’s going to be a game changer for us. Love when something so simple can be so impactful.

Quick Take: billionaire and the maid + fake dating = laugh out loud funny ✨Overall it was a classic fun Lynn Painter romance; well written and filled with witty humor and great chemistry. A few details I would’ve changed but overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. Included interesting perspective of the ultra-wealthy and their views on accumulating things.

Food that brought my family joy:

Friday night is pizza night in my family. My husband and I have been eating pizza every Friday for years. (We’ve been together for 10 years, so this tradition has been going on for at least 6-8 years now.)

Recipe Notes: This past week we bought little yeast packets and made our own pizza dough for the first time. It was mildly successful and we’ll definitely give it another try this week.

Next time we’ll make sure the oven reaches 425 before putting the pizza in!

Random things on my mind:

This past week we went through our freezer and tossed an embarrassing amount of old freezer-burnt food. Did you know that you can’t leave things in the freezer forever? 😆 I also need to go through our pantry and tossed expired food too. I know super processed things like chips and soda don’t necessarily get gross and moldy but they do go stale and flat.

— Note to self, look up recommended timeframe for keeping food in the freezer!

Bookish Notes

Saturday was National Book Lovers Day and Bookstore Romance Day, so we made it a point to visit two local indie bookstores. We stopped in at Powell’s on Burnside and I got to visit for the first time!! I bought a few books and goodies for myself and a few books for our kiddo too.

I must confess that buying books in person without looking up reviews online is so liberating — I love discovering something new and picking it up based on the cover, back description, and overall vibes without caring what other people thought about it!

This past week also brought TONS of book mail my way. Needless to say my TBR shelves are overflowing with great options to choose from.

The top shelf has the books I was gifted (16 + 5 arcs) and the bottom shelf has all the books I bought (9), plus the two pushkins and artwork print I treated myself to.

What brought me & my family joy:

• We had close friends come visit us for a long weekend. One of the bummers about living far from our friends is that we see each other less often but when we do get together it’s for wonderful pockets of time. Taking a Friday off to spend time with friends and enjoy wine tasting at one of our favorite wineries is always a good choice.

• Our kiddo is continuing to enjoy swim school. 💦

• We visited the local children’s science museum and our kiddo had the best time! I highly recommend getting annual memberships to your local zoo and museums, they usually pay for themselves within 2-4 visits and they often include discounts or free entry to other museums as well.

• Banana muffins - 🍌 we made these again and tweaked the recipe a bit.

• I went to my local Orange Theory Fitness and it was such an amazing workout! Did you know that many workout studios offer your first class free — if you can deal with the sales pitch — it’s a great way to try something new. You may even find your new favorite way to move and they often have class distinct package options.

Food that brought my family joy:

Pinterest find: Clara Plate’s Perfect Banana Muffins.

Recipe Notes: We made these banana muffins for the second time and changed up the recipe a bit again. I used 4 large bananas instead of 3. Used 1/3 cup brown sugar instead of 1/2 cup. Used 1/3 cup butter instead of 1/2 cup. Added a little cinnamon and topped the muffin batter with crushed up walnuts for flavor without making them too unhealthy.

Next time I’m going to see if I can sub in some Greek yogurt for less butter and add a little ground flax seed to make them healthier.

Random things on my mind:

One downside to socializing and eating out is the regret that comes from overindulging which for me equals sluggishness. I’m planning to focus on ramping up my workouts and healthy eating because I’ve got an excess of about 20 pounds that I know I’d feel better physically if it was gone. I want to work on gaining strength, especially so I can keep up with my growing kiddo. It takes a lot to scoop up an almost 30 pound kiddo.

I must confess a recent pet peeve —I can’t stand all of the social media and substack accounts that have a huge following that only post about how to grow your following. It’s like content creator clickbait. The other thing I can’t stand is bookish accounts that post about how they want to make new ‘bookish besties’ but they have at least 10x followers to how many they’re following. If you have 50k+ followers and you’re following under 1k people, I’m pretty sure you’re just looking for new followers, not friends.

I’m here for the genuine and organic interest in talking about shared experiences and for the people that show up authentically in their own lives. Give me more of real life heartfelt chatter and less of the ‘how to grow your blah blah blah’ and buy this product from me gibberish.

Every time I log into social media it’s filled with Halloween ads and it makes me so happy. It also makes me want to buy a TON of new things for the house that I don’t actually need but hey, we’re all about leaning into the things that bring us joy in our everyday lives, right? Cute spooky fall and Halloween décor never fails to make me smile, so don’t mind me while I add allllll the things to my shopping cart.

I liked the book selections but had to get real with myself because I have wayyyy too many unread books sitting on my TBR shelves. Mind you, I still selected my August Once Upon a Book Club box, August Aardvark box, aaaand signed up for Allurial, but hey, gotta take the small wins when I can!

Quick take: I loved this book and sincerely think it would make for a fantastic movie! It’s got a lot of depth, adventure, international locations, romance, treasure hunting, and is woven with difficult family dynamics and grief yet an overtone of hope and love.

Quick take: I loved listening to JVN narrate the audiobook. A novel about a haunted handbag and queer representation? So good!

Made some regular and some mini. Regular sized I baked for 18 mins and the mini I baked for 16 mins but possibly needed that long because I filled them almost all the way.

Absolutely delicious and this is my new go to recipe when I have brown bananas!

Good Morning Joyful Stackers and welcome to my new weekly blog series!

As life goes on I’ve had a continued desire to read, write, and share more. Perhaps it has something to do with getting older (hello late 30s). Or maybe it’s something that happens to new parents as they see their children experience things for the first time, with wide eyed wonder and joy.

It could be a sense of acknowledging that our time is not guaranteed and understanding the importance of embracing the time we do have on this earth. Back to the realization that I want to leave a legacy behind for my daughter, even if (especially if) my time is ever cut short.

Regardless of where the inspiration has come from, I’m creating a weekly blog series that I’ve decided to call The Joyful Weekly Edit. I hope you enjoy browsing through every week and discover something fun that will bring you joy too! I may also share an occasional mid-week post but for now I’m committing to once a week.
