Book Review ✨ What You Do To Me by Rochelle B. Weinstein

📕 Format: Paperback purchased

🗓️ Publication: 10.17.23

⭐️ My Thoughts: Enjoyed it

💻 Amazon Affiliate link: What You Do To Me

Quick Take:

I really enjoyed this book but can’t say it was a ‘loved’/5 star read because it had a slower pace and was a slower burn. However, it was very well written and I was surprised at how easy and enjoyable it was to read even though it had a nonlinear timeline format.

What you can expect:

🩵 Lots of musical references

🩵 Family drama

🩵 Jewish rep

🩵 Nonlinear timeline (but not confusing)

🩵 Multiple storylines that connect later

🩵 Slower paced but wonderful emotional story

🩵 Locations: Miami, New York, and LA

🩵 Older main character: 53 years old during the 2023 timeframe of the story

Content Warning:

✔️ child of divorce followed by a parent with second family

✔️ childhood trauma

✔️ loss, grief

Thoughts and notes

🩵 So much life and sadness but so much joy too. Twist towards the end made me cry.

🩵 It was sad that Sara’s family wasn’t more accepting of Sara’s interest in Eddie. He was a nice kid and you can’t dictate who your children should marry. The ultimate goal is to raise your children with as much love and support and possible with the desire for them to live a happy and fulfilling life.

Favorite Quotes & Passages:

💭Pg147 love the commentary about the bookstore and stepping out of your comfort zone

💭 Pg 158 love the commentary about how easy it is to dislike people from afar but difficult up close when you actually get to know them

💭Pg184 "When you want something in life, it's okay to ask for it. You'll never know what's possible without asking."

💭 Pg 320 "We both stand to learn a lot by seeing the people around us with clear eyes. None of us should be put on a pedestal. Every one of us is conflicted, limited, or ugly in some way. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of good. It’s possible to be many things at once. It’s called being human.”

💭Pg 335 “I think that's the thing about life. About relationships. About music. We never know what were going to get, but if we find a way to turn it into something that matters, we win."

💭Pg 340 in the author’s note: ‘I write books about people and places and experiences. Songwriters write music about the same. They write about love and friendship and loss and pain. They write of sunshine and forgiveness. We are all writers sharing our feelings with the world. We are storytellers.’
